How to take a good passport photo?
We use facial detection AI to edit and optimise your passport photo, but it's very important that you follows these guidelines when taking the picture.
Look straight ahead
Ensure even lighting across the face
Have a neutral expression
Both eyes should be visible, with no hair covering the face
Remove any hats, headphones or glasses
Otherwise, the results may not be ideal (or even strange), and your photo could fail the acceptance criteria.

Can I take passport photos with my phone?
Of course! Take a picture with your smartphone and we'll convert it to a high-quality passport photo. Instead of looking for local photographers, or "photo booths near me", simply take out your phone and snap a quick portrait (or use an existing one).
Do I need a white background?
Nope. One of the best things about Photobot is that it automatically removes the background in your photo using AI, and makes it look like it was taken in the studio. It's important that your British passport photo has a light/white background to be accepted.
Is smiling in UK passport photos allowed?
Unfortunately the UK passport photo requirements specify that you should keep a neutral expression. We don't recommend smiling or laughing in the picture.
Where can I print passport photos?
You might be able to print out your passport photo at a local Boots, Tesco, Ryman, and other place with a printer. But not all of them are guaranteed to have one, so the easier option is to place an order with us. We'll print it out on premium 240gsm photographic paper, and deliver your passport photo for free.
